Update! Funds have been raised for the surgery for Chewbacca! Thank you everyone for your support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We are always in need of your support to help other pets like Chewbacca. Click on donate button below.. your support will make a difference in the life of a pet.

Chewbacca, a 9-week-old Pekingese puppy, is in need of urgent surgery for a broken hip, and SNKC needs your help!

His owner’s young 3-year-old niece accidently fell on Chewbacca and is devastated that she hurt the puppy. Chewbacca’s owner has very limited money and cannot afford the surgery to repair his hip. They love their little puppy very much.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City has already depleted it’s funding for their Emergency Veterinary Care Assistance Program by helping many other animals this year and is asking the public for donations to help Chewbacca.

Crysler Animal Hospital (the vet clinic performing the surgery) has donated time and services, but some costs still remain for this very expensive surgery. Please help SNKC and Crysler Animal Hospital raise $1,300 to cover the cost. Please help us ensure he has the surgery he desperately needs so he can live a happy and healthy life.

Donations can be made online through paypal link below (you do not need a paypal account to donate) or mailed to SNKC C/O Emergency Veterinary Care Program PO Box 410303 Kansas City, MO 64141

As always your donation is tax deductible and your support is greatly appreciated!

Friday, February 22nd was a gala night for SNKC as we celebrated our past successes and ensured our future by meeting our lofty fundraising goal. Although sandwiched between two major snowstorms, the guests who did brave the cold had a marvelous time. The stage was set with the regal surroundings of the elegant Studio Dan Meiner, where over 100 silent auction items held interest while we enjoyed the wine, beer and camaraderie of fellow animal lovers. Of course dinner was spaghetti, but this year’s event it was provided by the Brio Tuscan Grille and it was both scrumptious and plentiful.

After dinner, the main event was a compelling presentation, live auction and a lucky attendee won a brand new I-pad in a boisterous game of Heads and Tails. Then we had another treat in store: music provided by DJ Kreations allowed us to celebrate by dancing the night away. What fun! SNKC wants to thank our sponsors, attendees, volunteers and donors for making the Spay-Ghetti Dinner Event a success and we look forward to seeing you and other SNKC friends next year too!

The National Weather Service (NWS) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have declared the week of March 4 – 8, 2013 as Severe Weather Awareness Week for Missouri. The goal of the week is quite simple: Save Lives! Spay & Neuter Kansas City is encouraging everyone to start thinking now and prepare for the upcoming severe weather season.

Pet owners must think about their pets as well and the best way to do this is by being prepared. Everyone should have a basic knowledge of severe weather safety rules and have a severe weather plan in place. This Tuesday, March 5th around 1:30pm, a severe weather drill will be conducted. Knowing what to do, or where to go when severe weather threatens can be the difference between life and death for you and your pet.

Tornado and Storm Safety Tips

Tornado situations will often produce anxiety, fear and a need to escape for some pets. Debris displaced by high winds, can cause injury to animals left outdoors. Take preparedness measures to protect and care for your pet during tornadoes.

Preparing Pets for Tornadoes

Create an emergency supply kit for your pet, should you need to evacuate your home due to heavy destruction.

A 3-5 day supply of food and water for your pet, bowls and a non-electric can opener.

Sanitation items, such as a litter box or puppy pads, and disposal equipment.

Crates to provide the animal with a secure and safe hiding spot; make sure that the crate is clearly labeled.

Leash and collar should you need to transport your pet, carrier for cats.

Any medications for pets and all medical records for them as well.

Identification.

All animals should have some sort of identification (collar with tag, microchip). Get your pet’s rabies, KCMO Pet License and Microchip at SNKC for only $30!

Take a photo of your pet and keep it with the medical records.

Prepare to seek shelter.

Practice getting the entire family, including pets, to the tornado safe area during calm weather.

Train your dog to go to the area on command or to come to you on command regardless of distractions.

Learn how to quickly and safely secure your cat.

Know the hiding places of your pet and how to quickly and safely gather your pet.

During a Tornado

Pet safety.

Bring pets indoor well in advance of a storm.

NEVER leave pets tied up outside.

If they are frightened, reassure them and remain calm.

Pets should be provided the same cover as humans during severe weather.

Put all pets in cages or carriers and in the safe room when a tornado warning is issued.

Animals can sense bad weather and will look for a place to hide if they sense it is near.

NEVER leave your pet chained outside or enclosed in a manner in which they cannot escape danger.

After a Tornado

Pet behavior.

Be aware that a pet’s behavior may change before, during and after a disaster.

In the first few hours after the storm, leash your pets when they go outside until they readjust to the situation.

Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and your pet may become confused and lost.

Pet safety.

Keep your pet away from storm damaged areas.

Power lines could be down and dangerous objects will be littered about everywhere.

Lost pets.

If pets cannot be found after a disaster, contact the local animal control office.

Bring along a picture of your pet, if possible.

February 19, 2013

Spay & Neuter Kansas City advises all pet owners that it is essential to provide adequate shelter and care for their pets during the upcoming winter storm. If at all possible, animals that normally stay outdoors should be brought indoors during freezing weather to protect them from the cold. If the pets absolutely must stay outside for a significant length of time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water. Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s Outreach Program is providing free hay or straw, dog houses and supplies to needy pets in the community on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at 1116 E. 59th Street in Kansas City, MO in preparation for the upcoming storm.

SNKC advises pet owners to keep pets inside as much as possible when temperatures drop. If the pets need to go outside, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. Even inside, provide a blanket, pillow or bed for the pet to use to stay warm. Wipe off your dog’s paws, legs, and stomach when he comes in from the snow or ice. Salt or other chemicals might make your dog sick if he swallows them while licking his paws. What’s more, his paw pads are sensitive and might bleed if snow or ice covers them. Pets that get too chilled could develop hypothermia or even frostbite.

SNKC is collecting gently used dog houses, hay, pet food and supplies as well as monetary donations to support their Outreach Program. SNKC assists thousands of pets in our community to encourage pet retention and promote responsible pet ownership. All supplies help needy pets in the Kansas City area helping to keep them out of our shelters and with the families who love them. Supplies and donations can be dropped off at SNKC Monday from 8am to 4pm Tuesday- Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm. Monetary donations accepted by mail: PO Box 410303, Kansas City, MO 64141 or online.

Help us reach our goal to Tag, License, Chip (and Spay/Neuter!) over 10,000 pets in our community in 2013!

Introducing Project T.L.C. (Tag, License and Chip)

Goal: Tag, License and Chip (microchip) 10,000 pets

A very small percentage of pets entering our area shelters are ever reunited with their owners because they lack one vital piece of information – identification.

Project T.L.C. (Tag, License and Chip) is an SNKC public awareness program to “identify” pets, increase pet retention and reunification of lost pets in the Greater Kansas City area.

Our goal is to tag, license and chip and spay and neuter 10,000 metro pets in 2013. We can’t do this alone and ask all pet owners to please share this important message with other pet owners. Properly identifying pets will:

Help assist local shelter workers and animal control in reuniting thousands of lost pets with their owners.

Entitle your pet to a FREE RIDE HOME if it is found by animal control and wearing its KCMO city license.

If at all possible, for the overall health of your pet, keep your dog or cat inside with you and your family. The happiest dogs are those who spend more time with their owners and are exercised but kept inside the rest of the time.

If your dog’s stay outside, you MUST provide adequate shelter. Winter weather can be extremely dangerous for pets if they do not have a warm place to go. Adequate shelter is a well-insulated dog house, with straw to keep them warm. Cats must have access to warm shelter as well and can suffer from frost bite quickly.

No matter how well-insulated the shelter they have access to, animals can still suffer from cold-related problems if they are too cold for too long. Many pets suffer from hypothermia; they become very lethargic and don’t move around much. If you notice these signs, take the animal to the veterinarian. If hypothermia gets a chance to really set in, the pet could die.

Frost bite is another serious risk to pets in cold weather and. Frostbite is due to long exposure to extreme cold. The ears and feet of the animal have the greatest chance of being frost bit. These areas will be very cold and swollen and is very painful for the animal. If you suspect the pet has frost bite, take it to the veterinarian.

Always check your pets’ feet when they come in from the snow. Sometimes, they have snow in the fur surrounding their feet or they can actually cut their feet on the ice. If salts or chemicals have been used where your pet walks, wash your pets feet immediately with a damp towel.

Outdoor pets use calories to generate heat in the wintertime. Outdoor pets will require at least 25% more calories to generate heat to keep warm. If your pet is primarily outdoors, ask your veterinarian about increasing your pet’s calorie intake during the winter season.

Pets need access to fresh water daily. Water freezes very quickly in cold weather so it’s very important to put out warm water a few times a day to keep it from freezing. Also, use a tip-resistant, ceramic or hard plastic water bowl rather than a metal one, as your pet’s tongue can stick and freeze to a cold metal.

Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife, which may crawl up under the hood. To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car’s hood to scare them away before starting your engine.

Antifreeze is a deadly poison, but it has a sweet taste that may attract animals and children. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze (and all household chemicals) out of reach.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s Outreach Program helps needy pets in our community all-year-round. Please support keeping animals in their homes with the owners who love them by making a small contribution today. Our program assists pet owners who are in financial need but providing a loving home to a once unwanted pet. Your support will help spay neuter, provide basic pet supplies or pet food to a needy pet.
