Dogs have shared their lives with humans for more than 12,000 years, and that coexistence has contributed substantially to humans’ quality of life. Today, dogs and cats are found in millions of households nationwide. Our outreach program provides education, wellness, and resources for pet owners in the most underserved areas of Kansas City.
SNKC formed its outreach program in 2005, the first of its kind in the region to have a true commitment of keeping pets in the homes with the families who love them. In 2015 the outreach program underwent re-branding to solidify the message that families are better together. Today, several outreach programs similar to Families Better Together are sweeping the nation with a goal of giving families the resources they need to keep their family together.
Over 95% of our outreach clients tell us that their pet is family. With most of our clients living below the poverty level, each family is overcoming unique obstacles. We do not judge pet owners based on limited financial resources and we do not take animals from their homes; because families are better together.
Our outreach team is our boots-on-the-ground approach to neighborhood engagement. Staff, volunteers, vets, vet techs, all coming together to walk through under-served neighborhoods, meeting pets and pet owners, spreading the word about our desire to help. The goal of our Street Team is to address pet welfare needs as we encounter them, to provide resources and education to people at their homes, and to bring our nonjudgmental approach to people where they live.
No special skills required, unless you consider compassion to be a trained skill. These are people just like you who want to make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners in the areas where help is needed the most.
